A private sewage disposal system consists of the on-site treatment and disposal of wastewater from an individual residence or commercial business. A public wastewater system consists of the collection, treatment, and disposal of wastewater from the residents and businesses of a community via miles of pipe, manholes, pump stations, overflow storage facilities, and treatment facilities. The installation, operation and maintenance of both systems is critical to the health and wellbeing of the environment, with the public wastewater system therefore constituting some of the most important work performed or managed by a governing body.
