Massachusetts Avenue Pump Station Improvements

Client: City of Buffalo
Location: Buffalo, NY

Nusbaumer was retained by the City of Buffalo to provide engineering services for the rehabilitation and modernization of the Massachusetts Avenue Pump Station, a critical component of the City’s water infrastructure system. The project originated from an engineering study completed by Nussbaumer and expanded to include comprehensive electrical, mechanical, structural, civil, and architectural improvements throughout the facility.

Due to operational requirements, the work was divided into two phases. Phase 1 includes transformer and spill containment system replacements and is currently under construction, with Nussbaumer providing construction administration and inspection services. Phase 2 includes major upgrades to the pump station’s electrical systems, pumps, motors, backup power, SCADA integration, HVAC, and facility infrastructure.

Key improvements include rehabilitation of the existing 23kV substation, installation of new switchgear and standby power systems, pump and motor upgrades with variable frequency drives (VFDs), modernization of control systems, and structural and architectural enhancements to improve long-term reliability, efficiency, and operational resiliency of the facility.
