Both partners (Newell Nussbaumer & Irving Clarke)
had previously been associated with George C. Diehl, Inc., Consulting Engineers in Buffalo, with Mr. Newell Nussbaumer as Vice President. The firm of George C. Diehl, Inc. had been established in 1898, and was discontinued in 1933 with the records being acquired by Nussbaumer & Clarke, Inc.
After Mr. Charles Velzy was made a member of the firm, the name was then changed to "Nussbaumer, Clarke and Velzy".
Mr. Irving Clarke resigned from the firm as an active partner, and became a consultant. Mr. Raymond H. N. Murray became a general partner.
Mr. Nussbaumer retired and sold the business to Daniel J. Hurley, P.E., Vito J. Caruso, P.E., Charles F. O’Donnell, and Robert B. Stannard.
The firm was sold to Richard Vandebrook, P.E., Walter E. Roeder, and Leland R. Reed.
Mr. Roeder became sole owner and served as such until 2000 when he sold the firm to Michael J. Sendor, P.L.S., and Michael F. Smith, P.E.
The firm moved its main office to its current location in the Gateway Executive Park.
Michael J. Sendor, P.L.S., and Michael F. Smith, P.E. purchased the firm.
The firm purchased the business of James Graf, Land Surveyors and maintains an office in North Tonawanda.
The firm purchased James L. Shisler, Land Surveyor and maintains an office in East Aurora.
2017 Begins the next chapter of our firm’s long history as Michael J. Borowiak, P.L.S., President and Michael T. Marino, P.E., Chief Executive Officer assumed ownership of this well respected firm.
The firm opened an office on Main Street in Lockport to better serve clients in Niagara County.
The firm opened an office in Canton, NY managed by Timothy Burley, P.E.
Michael T. Marino, P.E. continues as Chief Executive Officer and is joined by Andrew H. Gow, P.L.S. (President of Land Surveying), David M. Britton, P.E. (President of Engineering), and Craig M. Alexander, S.E., P.E., LEED AP (Chief Operations Officer).

Full-Service Capabilities, Local Expertise
Nussbaumer & Clarke, Inc. was established in 1933 by Newell L. Nussbaumer & Irving Clarke. In 1948, Charles R. Velzy, together with Nussbaumer and Clarke, formed the partnership of Nussbaumer, Clarke & Velzy. In 1961, the firm reorganized and returned the name to Nussbaumer & Clarke, Inc. Walter E. Roeder held ownership from 1984 until 2000, when Michael J. Sendor, PLS and Michael F. Smith, PE purchased the firm.
From 2017 to 2025, Michael J. Borowiak, PLS and Michael T. Marino, PE assumed ownership and leadership of Nussbaumer, building upon the legacy of engineering and surveying expertise. In January 2025, Michael J. Borowiak stepped down after 38 years of service to the company, transitioning the ownership team.
Michael T. Marino, PE continues as Chief Executive Officer. He was joined by Andrew H. Gow, PLS, serving as President of Land Surveying. David M. Britton, PE serves as President of Engineering. Craig M. Alexander, SE, PE, LEED AP has taken on the role of Chief Operations Officer. These four leaders, together with our dedicated staff, strive to continue the proud and time-tested tradition of providing outstanding engineering and surveying services to our clients in Western New York and beyond.
Today, Nussbaumer’s offices in Erie County (Buffalo and East Aurora), Niagara County (North Tonawanda and Lockport), and St. Lawrence County (Canton) enable our team to readily support our clients across the region and beyond.
